How Does a Membrane Nitrogen Generator Work?
A membrane nitrogen generator produces high purity nitrogen gas by forcing the compressed air through a membrane hollow-fiber bundle. As the air travels through the membrane fibers, the various constituents of air (e.g. H2O, CO2, O2) permeate across the fiber wall and are vented. The nitrogen does not permeate at the same speed as the other gasses in the compressed air, thus allowing the membrane to effectively separate the nitrogen and provide a steady supply of nitrogen gas for your application.
What Are the Benefits of the Membrane Nitrogen Generator?
Membrane nitrogen generators are extremely low-maintenance and stand up well to difficult conditions. Some varieties do not require electricity and have few or no moving parts, meaning there are no parts to wear out and require replacement. They are not generally affected by moisture, temperature extremes or other challenging environmental conditions.
What Is a Membrane Nitrogen Generator Used For? Which Industries?
Membrane nitrogen generators can be found in a wide variety of industries, including the food and beverage industry for retarding oxidation, the aerospace and automotive industries to fill tires, the pharmaceutical industry for fire safety, and a wide variety of other industries — especially those that operate in harsh conditions.
How Does This Type of Gas Generator Differ From Other Types of Gas Generators?
Industries that require regular access to nitrogen typically use membrane nitrogen generators or Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) generators. Rather than using a membrane, PSA nitrogen generators use adsorptive materials to filter out the nitrogen from other gasses in the atmosphere. If you are not sure which gas generator is more appropriate for your needs, contact The Titus Company and we can assess your business and help you find the right gas generator option.
WHAT IS MEMBRANE GAS GENERATION?
Let’s start from the basics. The air we breathe is made up of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and the remainder are trace gases (argon, carbon dioxide and other gases). The membrane nitrogen gas generator uses a process called selective permeation to separate the nitrogen molecules from the oxygen and other trace gases. For the process to work, the air has to permeate through thousands of porous hollow fibres. Each molecule passing through the fibres has a specific permeation rate that results in either diffusing through or dissolving out of the fibre membrane.
It is the most cost-effective solution for low flow applications, up to 400 scfh at 99.9% purity or 2500 scfh at 95% purity. The membrane generator has a relatively small footprint which allows for easy installations and can be installed vertically or horizontally.
There are no moving parts and there is no electricity required so it is easy to use and maintain. This design still allows the generator to achieve output purity levels between 95% – 99.9%. Furthermore, it is fairly quiet; it operates at less than 70 dBA. To put that in perspective, normal conversation ranges between 60 – 70 dBA, a vacuum cleaner operates in the 75 dBA range and the noise inside a car travelling at 100 kph is 70 – 80 dBA.
